What does a diabetologist do?
Diabetologist deals with disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, mainly with the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
In case of what problems should we consult a diabetologist?
Patients primarily visit a diabetology clinic with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The underlying cause of diabetes is a relative or complete lack of insulin or a lack of insulin action. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that focuses on disorders of carbohydrate metabolism but also affects fat and protein metabolism.
It is very important that so-called pre-diabetic conditions are recognized and treated as soon as possible because they lead to the development of type 2 diabetes:
impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)
impaired fasting glycemia (IFG), higher than normal but not yet reaching the diabetes limit
Nowadays, the diagnosis of insulin resistance (IR) is becoming more common, which is the basis of type 2 diabetes and is almost always present in case of overweight. Women with PCO syndrome also often have to deal with this problem, one of the common causes of female infertility.
Patients also often visit the clinic with gestational diabetes, the screening and treatment of which is of paramount importance for both the mother and the child.
Risk factors for diabetes:
family history of diabetes,
high blood fat level
elevated uric acid levels
pre-existing coronary artery disease,
previous gestational diabetes
Where can I get this medical specialty?
Common diabetological examinations
In the first step of treatment, the complex knowledge of the patient is most important for the diabetologist. At the first appointment, the diabetologist assesses the diabetic’s own and family history.
The physical examination and condition assessment also cover existing and possible complications, if necessary, the specialist will suggest further examinations. If the diabetes is newly diagnosed and the patient does not yet have adequate knowledge about the disease, the required diet, and correct blood glucose measurement, the doctor will help the patient find his/her way around all the questions and provide useful advice.
