Screening or diagnostic: knowing the difference can save lives
Understanding the difference between screening mammography and a diagnostic exam is essential for getting the right care. Screening is intended only for preventive testing of women without symptoms, with the goal of finding hidden abnormalities that can’t yet be felt. Because it is a routine procedure, the images are not evaluated on site right away but are read by two physicians in a double reading.
If you have a specific symptom, such as a lump, discharge, or retraction, or you are coming in for a follow-up of a previous breast condition, a comprehensive diagnostic exam is needed. In this case, the radiologist is present in person, performs a physical breast exam, and supplements the mammogram with an immediate breast ultrasound.
No symptoms, and over 40?
Don’t wait for symptoms to appear! Regular screening mammography is the most effective tool for protecting your breast health. Schedule your screening, which is recommended every two years.
