Proctological procedures

Surgical treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, anal polyps, and specific lesions of the anal canal with specialist evaluation, preoperative preparation, and postoperative follow-up.

Proctological procedures

From specialist consultation to postoperative follow-up

Proctological conditions do not always require surgery. The first step is an initial specialist evaluation, where the physician assesses the type and extent of the condition, reviews your symptoms, and recommends further diagnostic testing if necessary. For hemorrhoids, outpatient treatments such as rubber band ligation may be suitable, whereas other presentations may require surgical intervention.

If surgery is recommended, it is preceded by the required preoperative workup and an anesthesiology consultation before the procedure is performed. Following surgery, your operating surgeon establishes a personalized recovery plan, post-op instructions, and follow-up care tailored to your specific procedure.

What to keep in mind before surgery

  • Follow fasting instructions provided for general anesthesia: Because the listed proctological procedures are performed under general anesthesia, preoperative fasting is required. Exact cut-off times for food and liquid intake must be strictly observed as instructed during your anesthesiology evaluation.
  • Inform your physician in advance about all regular medications: It is especially critical to report anticoagulants (blood thinners) and antiplatelet drugs. Do not stop taking these medications on your own without medical guidance.
  • Always follow bowel preparation instructions specific to your procedure: Preparation protocols vary by type of proctological surgery; only use enemas, laxatives, or specific bowel preparations if explicitly directed.
  • Arrange an escort following general anesthesia: Discharge after same-day surgery requires meeting post-anesthesia clinical criteria, and having a responsible adult accompany you home is necessary.

What is outpatient same-day surgery?

Same-day (outpatient) surgery is an elective surgical approach where, provided postoperative recovery proceeds normally, an extended hospital stay is unnecessary. Following post-procedure monitoring and fulfillment of clinical discharge criteria, patients are discharged within 24 hours to continue recovery in the comfort of their home.

However, recovery timelines differ across procedures. Hemorrhoidectomy, simple fistula repair, and complex fistula management each involve distinct healing processes and wound care protocols, making individualized guidance from your operating surgeon paramount.

Available examinations and surgical procedures

Surgical care at Swiss Clinic spans from specialist clinical evaluations and minor outpatient procedures to advanced same-day surgical treatments:

Anal polypectomy with histology

An anal polyp is a tissue growth arising in the perianal skin or anal canal, where surgical removal is indicated due to local symptoms or specialist clinical evaluation. During surgery, the lesion is excised and sent for histopathological examination to determine its exact nature. At Swiss Clinic, anal polypectomy is performed under general anesthesia with histology included.

Are you considering surgery?

If surgery has been suggested for hemorrhoids, an anal fistula, an anal polyp, or another proctological condition, the first step is an in-depth specialist evaluation. During your consultation, we determine whether surgery is truly necessary and, if so, identify the most appropriate procedure. A clinical consultation clarifies whether surgical intervention is indicated, outlines the recommended procedure, and establishes all necessary preoperative evaluations.
