Endocrinology services

Specialist care for hormonal balance and metabolic health

Endocrinology is a specialized branch of internal medicine that focuses on the function, disorders, and treatment of the endocrine glands, which make up the body's hormonal system. Hormones travel through the bloodstream and regulate nearly every essential bodily function. They influence metabolism, growth, body temperature, mood, sleep, heart rate, and reproductive health. When this complex and finely balanced system becomes disrupted, it can affect the functioning of the entire body.

At Swiss Clinic, our experienced endocrinologists investigate the underlying causes of your symptoms and use advanced diagnostic methods to help restore and maintain your body's hormonal balance.

What organs and conditions does an endocrinologist treat?

Endocrinology focuses on the examination and treatment of hormone-producing organs, including the thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, ovaries, and testes. The most commonly diagnosed and treated conditions include:

  • Thyroid disorders: Hypothyroidism (such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis), hyperthyroidism (such as Graves' disease), thyroid nodules, and thyroid enlargement (goiter).
  • Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism: Insulin resistance (IR), prediabetes, and diabetes mellitus. Although diabetes is also managed within diabetology, the two specialties are closely connected.
  • Hormonal disorders in women and men: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS, also referred to by the newer name PMOS), menstrual irregularities, fertility problems, menopause-related symptoms, and testosterone deficiency.
  • Bone metabolism disorders: Osteoporosis and disorders of vitamin D and calcium metabolism.
  • Adrenal and pituitary gland disorders: Fatigue syndromes, rare hormone-producing tumors, and conditions involving reduced hormone production.

What happens during an endocrinology consultation?

At Swiss Clinic, patients receive comprehensive diagnostic care with minimal waiting times. Your specialist consultation begins with a thorough review of your medical history, including your family medical history, lifestyle, and specific symptoms.

Based on this assessment, your physician may order targeted laboratory tests, such as comprehensive hormone panels and blood glucose and insulin measurements, as well as diagnostic imaging, most commonly a painless thyroid ultrasound. Once an accurate diagnosis has been established, your endocrinologist will develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication, lifestyle and dietary counseling with the involvement of a dietitian, and ongoing, long-term specialist care.

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Laboratory reports and hormone test results: Please bring your previous blood test results, including TSH, free T3 (fT3), free T4 (fT4), antibody tests, and sex hormone measurements, along with any previous endocrinology reports or hospital discharge summaries.
  • List of medications and hormone replacement therapies: Prepare an accurate list of all medications, vitamins, contraceptives, and thyroid hormone preparations you currently take. (On the day of a thyroid function blood test, morning thyroid medication is generally taken after the blood sample has been collected. Please confirm the appropriate timing with your treating physician.)
  • Timing of menstrual cycle-dependent hormone tests: If your specialist has requested hormone testing in advance, certain reproductive hormones, such as LH, FSH, and estradiol, must be measured on specific days of your menstrual cycle, most commonly between days 3 and 5.

When should you see an endocrinologist?

The symptoms of hormonal imbalances are often nonspecific and can easily be mistaken for everyday stress or exhaustion. If you experience any of the following symptoms on a persistent basis, a comprehensive endocrinological evaluation is recommended:

  • Unexplained weight changes: Weight gain without changes to your lifestyle or diet, or sudden, unexplained weight loss.
  • Energy levels and mood: Chronic fatigue, persistent exhaustion, sleep disturbances, unexplained mood swings, increased irritability, anxiety, or symptoms of depression.
  • Skin and hair concerns: Significant hair loss, thinning hair, excessive hair growth (particularly on the face or chest in women), acne-prone skin, or unusually dry skin.
  • Temperature regulation problems: Increased sensitivity to heat or cold, excessive sweating, or frequent hot flashes.
  • Cardiovascular symptoms: A racing or pounding heartbeat at rest (palpitations) or sudden fluctuations in blood pressure.
  • Gynecological and urological symptoms: Irregular or missed menstrual periods, painful menstruation, reduced libido, fertility difficulties, or erectile dysfunction.
  • Other physical symptoms: Difficulty swallowing, a noticeable lump at the front of the neck, persistent digestive problems, or frequent muscle weakness.

Comprehensive diagnostics

We go beyond treating symptoms to investigate the complex hormonal feedback mechanisms that may be contributing to your condition.

On-site ultrasound examinations

During your endocrinology consultation, your specialist may recommend a separate thyroid ultrasound examination to support an accurate diagnosis.

Coordinated specialist care

We provide comprehensive care through close collaboration with our dietetics, gynecology, and internal medicine specialists.

Personalized treatment

We tailor medication and hormone replacement dosages to your individual health needs, lifestyle, and laboratory results.

Restoring hormonal balance and overall wellness

Hormone imbalances often develop quietly over time. An endocrinology evaluation pinpoints the subtle biochemical shifts behind unexplained weight changes, irregular cycles, or persistent fatigue.

Following a thorough medical history and physical exam, our specialists put together a clear diagnostic plan with targeted blood tests and imaging. Through modern medication and practical lifestyle changes, we help reset your body's natural rhythms, relieve your symptoms, and protect your heart and bone health for the years ahead.

If you are dealing with constant fatigue, unexpected weight shifts, or cycle irregularities, our specialist checkups help uncover what's going on and find a safe, personalized path forward.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about hormone health and endocrinology care.

Not for the doctor consultation itself. However, if you are having blood work done on the same day—especially for tests like glucose, insulin, TSH, or other metabolic markers—you will need to fast for 8 to 10 hours beforehand. Drinking plain water is fine and recommended.

If you take thyroid hormone medication (such as Synthroid, levothyroxine, or Euthyrox), you generally shouldn't take it the morning of your test. Instead, bring your pill with you and take it right after your blood draw. Always confirm with your doctor first, as some specific checks may require different instructions.

Your first visit usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, covering an in-depth conversation about your symptoms, medical history, and a physical exam. Your doctor may then order targeted blood tests or an ultrasound. Once the results are in, you'll meet for a follow-up to review the findings and outline your personalized treatment plan.

Thyroid hormones regulate your body's base metabolism. When your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), your metabolic rate slows down, meaning your body burns fewer calories at rest. This can cause fluid retention, fatigue, and stubborn weight gain that doesn't respond to diet changes alone. Restoring your hormone balance helps get your metabolism back up to speed.

Conditions like elevated prolactin levels, PCOS, or an underactive thyroid can directly interfere with ovulation or prevent an embryo from implanting properly. Balancing your hormones through targeted endocrine care is often a key first step toward a successful, healthy pregnancy.
