Psychological support for stress, anxiety, burnout, relationship and life challenges, grief, self-esteem concerns, and other emotional difficulties.

Psychological counseling

Support when you do not want to face challenges alone

You do not have to be experiencing a serious mental health problem to see a psychologist. Ongoing stress, anxiety, difficulties at work or in relationships, grief, low self-confidence, or a major life change can all become overwhelming. A professional outside perspective can help you work through these challenges.

Psychological counseling provides a safe, supportive setting in which to better understand your concerns, identify recurring patterns of thinking and behavior, and develop coping strategies you can use in everyday life.

What to know before your psychological counseling appointment

No special preparation is needed for a psychological consultation. The first meeting is primarily an opportunity to understand what brings you in, how the issue affects your daily life, and what changes you would like to make.

How can you prepare for your appointment?

  • Your reason for seeking support: Consider what has prompted you to seek help. You do not need a specific diagnosis or a perfectly worded explanation, but it may help to think about which situations are currently most difficult and how long they have been affecting you.
  • Identifying your goals for change: Think about what you would like to change. This might include reducing anxiety, managing stress more effectively, processing a loss, improving communication, or gaining a deeper understanding of yourself.
  • Previous care and experiences: If you have previously received psychological or psychiatric care, it is helpful to mention it. Sharing what kind of support you received, what worked, and what was less helpful can provide useful context.
  • Taking notes: If talking about the issue feels difficult, you can make a few notes beforehand. Writing down important events, symptoms, recurring thoughts, or questions may make the first conversation easier, but it is entirely optional.

When should you see a psychologist?

Psychological support may be appropriate even without a diagnosed mental health condition if an issue is causing ongoing distress or affecting your quality of life:

  • Stress, anxiety, and excessive worry: If you find it difficult to unwind, feel constantly tense, ruminate frequently, or notice that anxiety is limiting more and more areas of your life.
  • Burnout and persistent exhaustion: If your motivation has declined, you feel emotionally drained, your performance has suffered, or demands at work and in your personal life consistently exceed your capacity to cope.
  • Relationship and family difficulties: Recurring conflicts, communication problems, breakups, the loss of a relationship, or family tension.
  • Grief, loss, and challenging life events: Coping with the death of a loved one, divorce, moving, changing jobs, trauma, or another major life change.
  • Self-esteem and self-awareness concerns: Persistent lack of self-confidence, harsh self-criticism, difficulty making decisions, uncertainty about identity, or a desire for deeper self-understanding.

We start with your individual needs

Your current challenges, personal goals, and the changes that matter most to you shape the focus of each consultation.

Understanding recurring patterns

Psychological counseling can help you recognize patterns of thinking, feeling, and behavior that repeatedly create difficulties.

New ways to cope

Together, you can develop tools and perspectives that help you manage challenges in everyday life.

Additional support when needed

If your symptoms also call for a psychiatric or other medical evaluation, we can help identify the appropriate next steps in your care.

A conversation designed to support change

During your first psychological consultation, the psychologist will learn about your current concerns, their background, and how they affect different areas of your life. Together, you can identify the goals of counseling and determine the best way forward.

The length and focus of counseling vary from person to person. A shorter course of counseling may be sufficient for a clearly defined life challenge, while more complex or longstanding difficulties may require more extended psychological support. If another type of care, such as a psychiatric evaluation or psychotherapy, would be more appropriate, that need can also be identified.

Have stress, anxiety, burnout, or a difficult life situation been weighing on you for some time? Psychological counseling can help you better understand your concerns, recognize your own strengths, and explore possible paths forward.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about psychological counseling.

It can be helpful to seek psychological support even if you do not have a diagnosed mental health condition. Ongoing stress, anxiety, relationship conflict, grief, burnout, low self-confidence, or a difficult life situation may be reason enough to seek support.

The first session is primarily an opportunity to get acquainted and assess your concerns. The psychologist will ask what brings you in, how long the issue has been present, how it affects your daily life, and what you hope to achieve through counseling. You do not need to have a perfectly formulated explanation ready.

A psychiatrist is a physician who evaluates and treats mental health conditions and can prescribe medication when needed. A psychologist uses psychological approaches to help people understand and address emotional, relationship, life, and coping difficulties, among other concerns. In some cases, both types of care may play a role.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of sessions depends on the nature of your concerns, how long they have been present, your goals, and how your work together progresses. After the first few consultations, it is usually possible to outline a more specific recommended approach.

If you are experiencing severe mood symptoms, significant difficulties with everyday functioning, psychotic symptoms, or a possible need for medication, a psychiatric evaluation may also be appropriate. If you are in immediate danger of harming yourself or are experiencing an acute crisis, do not wait for a scheduled counseling appointment; seek emergency help immediately.
