Aspiration cytology

Ultrasound-guided aspiration cytology, also known as fine-needle aspiration, uses ultrasound imaging to guide a thin needle into the area being examined.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology

Precise cytologic sampling and pathological diagnostics in Budapest

Lumps or nodules detected through physical examination or ultrasound can cause uncertainty and concern. While advanced imaging techniques can accurately identify the location and structure of these abnormalities, cellular analysis is necessary to establish a definitive diagnosis and determine whether a lesion is benign.

At our clinic, we perform ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies with minimal discomfort. The collected samples are evaluated at our accredited pathology laboratory to provide accurate results as promptly as possible.

After disinfecting the skin, a cytopathologist inserts a fine needle into the suspicious lesion. The procedure is performed under real-time ultrasound guidance, allowing the radiologist to visualize both the targeted area and the sampling needle on the monitor. This enables precise guidance to ensure that the sample is collected from the most appropriate location.

The examination can be performed in the following areas:

  • Breast
  • Thyroid gland
  • Superficial lymph nodes and other lesions located near the skin surface

Important information before your examination

Fine-needle aspiration cytology is a minimally invasive outpatient sampling procedure that does not require hospitalization. To ensure a safe procedure and accurate diagnostic sampling, please review the following recommendations before your appointment.

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Food and hydration: Fasting is not required for this examination. You may eat and drink normally before your appointment.
  • Blood-thinning medications: If you regularly take anticoagulants, blood thinners, or anti-inflammatory medications, be sure to inform your physician before the procedure to help minimize the risk of bleeding.
  • Comfortable clothing: We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined, such as the neck, armpit, or chest.

When is fine-needle aspiration cytology recommended?

Fine-needle aspiration is used to help determine whether abnormalities found in various organs are benign or malignant. The examination may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Thyroid nodules: Cytologic evaluation of palpable or ultrasound-detected thyroid nodules, particularly those showing signs of growth.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes: Investigation of persistent lymph node enlargement in the neck, armpit, or groin, especially when the swelling has been present for several weeks, is palpable, or is painless.
  • Breast lumps: Cytologic evaluation of solid masses or cysts identified during mammography or breast ultrasound examinations.
  • Subcutaneous lesions: Diagnostic evaluation of lumps or nodules detected in the salivary glands or soft tissues.
  • Inconclusive ultrasound findings: Further investigation when a radiologist determines that tissue-based diagnostic evaluation is warranted based on the imaging characteristics of a lesion.

Available examinations

At our clinic, samples are collected under continuous ultrasound guidance to ensure maximum precision and safety. Our experienced pathologists carefully analyze each sample.

Aspiration cytology – initial needle pass with pathology analysis

Targeted ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the lesion, including preparation of cytology slides and comprehensive pathological analysis of the collected samples.

Why choose Swiss Clinic?

High-resolution ultrasound guidance, minimally uncomfortable tissue sampling, and advanced laboratory diagnostics to help you get the answers you need as quickly as possible.

Millimeter-level ultrasound precision

Real-time ultrasound imaging helps ensure precise needle placement, even when sampling very small nodules.

Minimally invasive sampling with minimal discomfort

Sampling with an extremely fine needle minimizes tissue trauma and typically causes discomfort similar to a routine blood draw.

Reliable cytologic diagnosis

Detailed microscopic examination helps determine whether a lesion is benign or malignant, providing valuable information for an accurate diagnosis.

Prompt and predictable turnaround times

Following sample collection, you will receive your pathology results within a short turnaround time, without unnecessary delays.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions regarding diagnostic procedures.

The needle used for the procedure is very thin, similar in gauge to needles used for routine blood draws. The insertion causes only brief, minimal localized discomfort or slight pressure, making local anesthesia unnecessary. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the sample is collected.

No, fasting is not required for this procedure. You may eat and drink normally before your appointment. If you are taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications, please inform your physician in advance to discuss any necessary personalized adjustments.

Smear preparation, specialized staining, and microscopic pathological evaluation of the cellular samples take a few business days. You will receive a digital notification once your results are finalized, and the written medical report will be accessible immediately in your patient portal.
