Advanced preanesthesia evaluations and surgical preparation in Budapest

A thorough preanesthesia evaluation is essential to the safety of planned medical procedures, endoscopic examinations, and surgeries. Existing medical conditions, regularly prescribed medications, and individual physiological factors all play an important role in determining the most appropriate anesthesia technique.

At our anesthesiology clinic, we conduct comprehensive, targeted medical assessments to reduce surgical risks and develop personalized anesthesia plans, prioritizing patient safety and supporting a smooth, comfortable recovery.

Anesthesiology services are available exclusively for medical procedures arranged by Swiss Clinic.

Important information before your anesthesia consultation

The purpose of a preanesthesia consultation is to assess your overall health, minimize potential risks, and determine the safest and most appropriate anesthesia technique for your individual needs. To ensure thorough preparation for your procedure and support your safety, please review the following recommendations before your appointment.

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Food and hydration: You do not need to fast before your preanesthesia consultation. You may eat and drink normally before your appointment.
  • Regular medications: Please be prepared to provide the names, doses, and dosing schedules of all medications you take regularly.
  • Previous experiences with anesthesia: Inform your anesthesiologist if you have experienced anesthesia-related difficulties, delayed awakening, or severe nausea following a previous procedure.

When is an anesthesiology consultation recommended?

A preanesthesia consultation helps minimize potential risks associated with planned medical procedures, endoscopic examinations, and surgeries. An evaluation by an anesthesiologist is recommended in the following situations:

  • Before planned surgical procedures: Preoperative preparation for outpatient surgery, plastic surgery, gynecologic procedures, or orthopedic surgery.
  • Before procedures requiring sedation or general anesthesia: Planning for the safe administration of anesthesia during endoscopic procedures, such as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy) or colonoscopy.
  • For patients with existing chronic medical conditions: Anesthesia risk assessment for individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or pulmonary conditions.
  • To evaluate previous anesthesia-related complications: Assessment of complications during previous surgeries, delayed emergence from anesthesia, or severe postoperative nausea.
  • To review medications taken regularly: Determining whether adjustments to medications, particularly anticoagulants and blood pressure medications, are necessary before and after surgery.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions regarding anesthesia evaluations.

For the evaluation, you will need comprehensive routine lab test results not older than 30 days (complete blood count, electrolytes, kidney function, liver function, blood glucose, coagulation profile), a resting ECG report, and an accurate list of all your current medications.

Under general anesthesia, the patient is in a deep, unconscious state and requires assisted ventilation. In contrast, procedural sedation induces a lighter, sleep-like state during which the patient breathes spontaneously, feels no pain or discomfort from the procedure, and experiences a significantly faster recovery.

As a general guideline, no solid food should be consumed for at least 6 hours before surgery or anesthesia. Small sips of clear, non-carbonated water are permitted up to 2 hours prior to the procedure; however, precise fasting instructions will always be confirmed during your specialist consultation.
