Advanced hearing tests and objective audiological diagnostics in Budapest

Hearing loss, tinnitus, or a persistent sensation of muffled hearing can make social interactions and everyday work more challenging while also contributing to mental fatigue. These symptoms may be caused by abnormalities of the eardrum or middle ear, circulatory problems, or dysfunction of the sensory cells in the inner ear.

During your initial consultation, our audiology specialist will ask about your current symptoms, previous hearing-related concerns, and any relevant family medical history. Based on this information and a thorough review of your medical history, the specialist will determine which diagnostic tests are necessary and how the examination should proceed.

Important information and preparation for your hearing test

If you experience sudden hearing loss in one ear developing over hours or days, severe spinning dizziness (vertigo), vomiting, or facial paralysis, seek immediate medical attention at an emergency ear, nose, and throat (ENT) department. For scheduled hearing assessments, please follow the recommendations below.

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Clear ear canals: Unobstructed ear canals are essential for reliable hearing test results. If you have impacted earwax, removal by an ENT specialist is necessary before testing.
  • Rest from loud noise: Avoid concerts, noisy machinery, and listening to loud music through headphones for 12–24 hours before your examination to prevent temporary auditory fatigue that could affect your test results.
  • Colds and nasal congestion: Severe nasal congestion can affect middle ear pressure and interfere with test results. If you have a significant cold, we recommend scheduling your hearing assessment after you have recovered.

When should you see an audiology specialist?

Hearing disorders often develop gradually, although some symptoms may appear suddenly. A specialist evaluation is recommended if you experience any of the following:

  • Difficulty understanding speech: Trouble following conversations in noisy environments, social settings, or over the phone, or frequently needing others to repeat themselves.
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus): Persistent or recurring sounds such as ringing, buzzing, rumbling, or clicking when no external sound source is present.
  • Ear pressure and a feeling of fullness: Persistent pressure or muffled hearing following a cold or air travel, potentially caused by inadequate ventilation of the middle ear through the Eustachian tube.
  • Sudden hearing loss: A condition requiring immediate medical evaluation that may be associated with impaired blood circulation in the inner ear.
  • Regular exposure to loud noise: If your work or lifestyle involves prolonged exposure to high noise levels and you would like to have your hearing thresholds assessed.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions regarding diagnostic evaluations.

Neither test causes any pain. During audiometry, you listen to tones at various frequencies through comfortable headphones and press a button when you hear them. Tympanometry uses a small, soft probe to evaluate eardrum mobility and middle ear pressure, which produces at most a mild sensation of ear fullness.

The specialist consultation, physical examination, sound booth audiometry, and tympanometry typically take 25 to 35 minutes in total, after which your physician immediately reviews the graphs and provides your medical report.

Audiometry is a subjective hearing test that measures the softest sound levels a patient can hear across various frequencies. Tympanometry, on the other hand, is an objective diagnostic measurement that evaluates eardrum compliance and middle ear pressure automatically, without requiring active patient feedback.
