Screening mammography

Preventive breast screening for women over 40 with no symptoms, using gentle two-view imaging, independent double reading by specialist physicians, and results within 72 hours.

Screening mammography exam

A safety net for women without symptoms: early detection of hidden abnormalities

In their early stages, breast cancers can be so small that they can’t be felt by hand and cause no noticeable symptoms or pain. The purpose of regular screening is to detect these “silent,” symptom-free abnormalities in time, when treatment is most effective and the chance of a full recovery is highest.

Swiss Clinic’s screening mammography is a fast, reliable procedure designed specifically for women without symptoms. Two digital views are taken of each breast, which are later reviewed by two independent radiologists, providing maximum professional assurance.

What to know before your visit

The exam doesn’t require fasting. To keep things quick and accurate, please keep the following in mind:

What to keep in mind before you arrive

  • Skip deodorants and cosmetics: On the day of your exam, do not use antiperspirant, body lotion, powder, or perfume on your chest and underarm area, as particles from these products can mimic calcifications on the image.
  • Appointment timed to your cycle: Although screening can be done at any time, breast tissue is less tender between days 4 and 16 of the menstrual cycle, which makes the exam more comfortable.
  • Tell us about breast implants: Please let the radiologic technologist know before the exam if you have implants so that a special imaging technique can be used.
  • Previous images: If you have previous mammograms, please bring them so they can be compared with your new images.

Who should have a screening mammogram, and when?

The criteria and indications for screening are strictly distinct from those for diagnostic exams:

  • Women over 40, as prevention: Routine breast screening every two years is recommended for every woman age 40 and older.
  • No symptoms at all: For women who have no lumps, pain, skin changes, or nipple discharge.
  • More than a year since your last exam: You must not have had a mammogram within the past year.
  • With breast implants: Screening can be performed safely with implants using a special positioning technique.
  • Important notice: Screening cannot be performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding! If you have a specific symptom (for example, a palpable lump), do not book a screening exam. Book a comprehensive diagnostic exam instead!

How a screening mammogram works:

  1. 1

Before the screening mammogram, a qualified radiologic technologist records your information, medical history, and family history.

  2. 2

First, the breast is checked by touch (palpation), followed by imaging of the breast tissue.

  3. 3

The images from your screening mammogram are evaluated independently by two physicians certified in comprehensive breast diagnostics.

If neither finds an abnormality, no further testing is needed.

  4. 4

If our physicians find something on the images that needs clarification, additional views or follow-up tests (e.g., breast ultrasound, aspiration cytology, core biopsy, stereotactic vacuum-assisted biopsy) may be needed.

We will notify the patient by email.

Additional tests are not included in the price of breast screening.

Screening or diagnostic: knowing the difference can save lives

Understanding the difference between screening mammography and a diagnostic exam is essential for getting the right care. Screening is intended only for preventive testing of women without symptoms, with the goal of finding hidden abnormalities that can’t yet be felt. Because it is a routine procedure, the images are not evaluated on site right away but are read by two physicians in a double reading.

If you have a specific symptom, such as a lump, discharge, or retraction, or you are coming in for a follow-up of a previous breast condition, a comprehensive diagnostic exam is needed. In this case, the radiologist is present in person, performs a physical breast exam, and supplements the mammogram with an immediate breast ultrasound.

No symptoms, and over 40?

Don’t wait for symptoms to appear! Regular screening mammography is the most effective tool for protecting your breast health. Schedule your screening, which is recommended every two years.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about comprehensive breast diagnostics.

Screening is only for women without symptoms. It typically consists of two-view 2D X-ray images, and you receive your results within 72 hours after the double reading by physicians. A diagnostic exam is done when you have a specific symptom: the radiologist is present in person, examines the breast by touch, performs an immediate ultrasound, and gives you your report right away.

Yes, screening can be done safely for women with breast implants. Our trained technologists use a special positioning technique, so the light pressure and X-ray exposure do not damage the implant.

No. With screening, there is no radiologist on site to review the images right away. The images are reviewed later, independently, by two separate radiologists (double reading), and we send your results within 72 hours.

A callback does not automatically mean a malignant disease! Mammograms often show harmless benign findings (such as dense glandular tissue or a cyst) that need to be clarified with ultrasound or targeted imaging to be safe. You will be informed about additional tests by email.

No, the exam has no fasting requirement. You can eat and drink as usual before the exam. However, please do not use deodorant, body lotion, or powder on your chest area on the day of the exam.
