Neurology

Comprehensive specialist evaluation and treatment for headaches, migraines, dizziness, numbness, movement disorders, memory impairment, and other neurological conditions.

Neurology consultation

Precise evaluation of neurological symptoms to determine the right treatment plan

Disorders of the nervous system can present with diverse symptoms: from recurring headaches and dizziness to numbness, tremors, and balance issues, as well as changes in memory or mobility. While these symptoms do not always indicate a severe neurological disorder, identifying their underlying cause is essential when symptoms are persistent, recurring, or progressive.

At Swiss Clinic's neurology practice, your evaluation begins with a detailed medical history and a comprehensive neurological physical examination. Based on these findings, the specialist determines whether additional laboratory tests, neuroimaging, or specialized diagnostic evaluations are required, and designs a personalized treatment and monitoring plan.

Important information before your visit

An accurate chronological history of your symptoms and knowledge of prior diagnostic findings form the cornerstone of a neurological diagnosis. We encourage you to gather and bring all relevant medical records to your appointment.

What to keep in mind before your visit

  • Previous medical records and imaging: Please bring prior neurology reports, hospital discharge summaries, CT and MRI findings, and the original image files or discs whenever available.
  • List of medications: Note all current prescription and as-needed medications, exact dosages, and any known drug allergies.
  • Headache diary: If you are seeking care for headaches or migraines, keep a log of attack frequency, duration, intensity, associated symptoms, potential triggers, and medications taken.
  • Fasting instructions: Fasting is generally not required for a clinical neurology consultation. If laboratory blood draws or specialized diagnostic tests are scheduled on the same day, please follow the specific preparation instructions provided.

When should you consult a neurologist?

Scheduling a neurology consultation is particularly recommended in the following cases:

  • Headaches and migraines: Recurrent or persistent headaches, migraine attacks, changes in your typical headache pattern or frequency, or headaches poorly managed by current therapy.
  • Dizziness and balance disorders: Episodes of vertigo, generalized unsteadiness, gait disturbances, or impaired balance, particularly when persistent or recurrent.
  • Numbness and sensory disturbances: Persistent or recurrent numbness in the extremities, tingling (paresthesia), diminished sensation, or other sensory changes.
  • Tremors and movement disorders: Involuntary hand tremors, sudden or involuntary movements, slowness of movement (bradykinesia), muscle stiffness, or gait alterations.
  • Memory concerns and chronic neurological conditions: Progressive memory decline or cognitive changes, as well as routine management of diagnosed conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis.
  • Important: Sudden onset of facial drooping, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, acute speech difficulties, altered consciousness, or a sudden, severe "thunderclap" headache requires immediate emergency medical attention (call emergency services); do not wait for an outpatient appointment.

Headache center

Acute Migraine and Headache Center

The Headache Center of Swiss Medical Services is Hungary's first dedicated private headache clinic, where internationally recognized specialists evaluate and manage the full spectrum of headache disorders.

Since April 2021, Swiss Premium Health Centers have offered specialized care for headache sufferers. As the first facility of its kind in Budapest, our Acute Migraine and Headache Center provides advanced therapeutic options for headaches unresponsive to standard medications.

This specialized treatment is primarily recommended for individuals whose pre-existing (migraine or other) headaches have intensified and failed to respond to customary medications. Our clinic is also an ideal choice if severe headache pain and accompanying symptoms (such as nausea or vomiting) prevent oral medication intake.

A neurological evaluation begins with precise mapping of symptoms

Neurologists specialize in the function and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. Diagnostic evaluations rarely start with instrumental tests alone: a detailed chronological history and a focused neurological physical examination are fundamental in determining the anatomical source of your symptoms.

Depending on your specific complaints, testing may include detailed evaluations of muscle strength, deep tendon reflexes, sensory perception, coordination, balance, and gait. Based on these findings, the neurologist determines whether further laboratory work, neuroimaging, or specialized neurophysiological diagnostics are warranted, establishing a clear management or surveillance strategy.

Are you living with recurring headaches, dizziness, numbness, tremors, or other nervous system symptoms? Our board-certified neurologists will thoroughly review your symptoms and prior medical records, creating a targeted diagnostic and treatment plan for your next steps.

Main focus and diagnostic areas:

Headaches and migraines

  • Diagnostic evaluation of recurrent or chronic headaches
  • Specialist management and preventive treatment for migraines
  • Investigation of headaches with changing character or frequency
  • Detailed review of headache diaries and previous treatment responses

Dizziness, numbness, and movement disorders

  • Investigation of recurrent vertigo and balance disorders
  • Evaluation of limb numbness, paresthesia, and sensory deficits
  • Assessment of tremors, bradykinesia, and gait abnormalities
  • Diagnostic workup for suspected peripheral neuropathies

Frequently asked questions

Common questions regarding our neurology clinic and specialist evaluations.

A neurological evaluation is indicated for recurrent or changing headaches, migraines, vertigo, chronic numbness or sensory disturbances, tremors, balance and coordination deficits, fainting episodes, memory difficulties, or any symptoms suspected to originate in the nervous system. Sudden, severe neurological symptoms require immediate emergency care.

The neurologist begins with an extensive review of your medical history, including symptom onset, progression, pre-existing conditions, medications, and previous diagnostic reports. This is followed by a targeted physical examination that assesses cranial nerves, motor strength, reflexes, sensory function, coordination, balance, and gait.

No. For many primary headache disorders, such as typical migraines or tension-type headaches, a comprehensive medical history and normal neurological examination are diagnostic. The specialist determines whether neuroimaging (CT or MRI) is needed based on clinical signs, symptom features, and the presence of any warning signs (red flags).

Keeping a headache diary is exceptionally helpful. Record the date and time of attacks, frequency, duration, pain intensity and location, associated symptoms (such as visual aura, nausea, or light sensitivity), potential triggers, and all medications taken along with their effectiveness. This information substantially aids your neurologist in identifying the headache subtype and optimizing treatment.

No. Fasting is not required for a standard clinical neurology examination; you may eat and drink as usual before your visit. If laboratory blood testing or specialized diagnostic procedures requiring specific preparation are scheduled for the same appointment, please follow the separate instructions provided for those tests.
