Gastroenterology

Identifying the underlying causes of digestive disorders for lasting relief

Bloating, recurring heartburn, abdominal cramps, and unexplained changes in bowel habits can affect not only your daily comfort but also your overall health and well-being. These symptoms may be caused by food intolerances, chronic inflammation, or an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Without appropriate specialist care, the underlying conditions may worsen over time.

At Swiss Clinic, our gastroenterology services combine a thorough medical history assessment with advanced laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and, when necessary, gentle endoscopic procedures that can also be performed under sedation. Our goal is to identify the root causes of your symptoms and develop an effective, personalized treatment plan that provides lasting relief and improves your quality of life.

What to know before your gastroenterology examination

Proper preparation is essential for an accurate diagnosis. Depending on the examinations scheduled, certain preparations may be required before your specialist consultation or laboratory tests:

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Fasting before blood tests: If laboratory blood tests are scheduled on the day of your consultation, please arrive after fasting for at least 8–10 hours. You may drink plenty of plain water during this period.
  • Previous medical records and reports: Please bring the results of any previous gastroenterology examinations, including endoscopy reports, ultrasound findings, laboratory results, and hospital discharge summaries, along with a list of medications you currently take.
  • Preparation for endoscopy: If you are scheduled for an upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) or colonoscopy, our team will provide detailed written instructions regarding the required dietary restrictions and, for colonoscopy, the bowel preparation and laxative protocol.

When should you see a gastroenterologist?

Digestive symptoms should never be ignored. A specialist examination is recommended if you experience any of the following symptoms or conditions:

  • Upper digestive tract symptoms: Persistent heartburn, acid reflux, sour-tasting regurgitation, burning pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Lower digestive tract and abdominal symptoms: Chronic bloating, alternating diarrhea and constipation, lower abdominal cramps, or mucus or blood in the stool.
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue: Unintentional weight loss, iron-deficiency anemia, chronic exhaustion, or suspected nutrient malabsorption.
  • Suspected food intolerances and allergies: Symptoms associated with gluten intolerance (celiac disease), lactose intolerance, or fructose intolerance, particularly when they occur after eating.
  • Family history of digestive disorders: A family history of stomach or colorectal cancer, or inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Digestive system balance and internal organ health

Our digestive system does far more than process nutrients—it serves as the core of our immune defense. Chronic inflammation, malabsorption, or an altered gut microbiome can undermine whole-body wellness. Effective care begins by moving beyond short-term symptom relief to uncover the underlying biochemical and structural causes.

At our clinic, gastroenterological evaluations follow a structured, patient-friendly pathway. Our specialists use modern endoscopic and laboratory technologies, collaborating directly with dietitians, endocrinologists, and surgeons to ensure seamless care across every step, from dietary adjustments to advanced medical therapies.

Are recurring digestive issues, bloating, or acid reflux disrupting your daily life? You don't have to live with persistent discomfort. Our experienced gastroenterologists offer gentle diagnostic evaluations and tailored treatment plans to help restore your digestive well-being.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions regarding our gastroenterology consultations.

A gastroenterology consultation is recommended whenever you experience persistent or recurring digestive issues. These include frequent abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, excessive gas, heartburn (acid reflux), unexplained weight loss, chronic diarrhea or constipation, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms pointing toward food intolerances of unknown origin.

Our specialists diagnose and medically manage diseases of the entire digestive system—the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas (excluding cases requiring primary surgical intervention). The most common conditions include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), medical management of inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), celiac disease, and various liver and biliary disorders.

The appointment begins with an in-depth discussion (medical history taking) covering your past medical history, lifestyle habits, and current symptoms. This is followed by a physical examination where the physician palpates and auscultates the abdomen. Based on your symptoms and prior medical records, the specialist establishes a clinical diagnosis, outlines any necessary diagnostic investigations, and recommends therapy, lifestyle modifications, or dietary adjustments.

Fasting is generally not required for an initial specialist consultation. However, if you also have scheduled same-day diagnostic procedures, such as an abdominal ultrasound or specific fasting blood tests (e.g., blood glucose or lipid panel), the respective fasting requirements for those examinations must be followed.

Please bring all prior medical records, especially laboratory reports, imaging studies (such as abdominal ultrasound, CT, or MRI reports), and hospital discharge summaries related to your digestive system. An accurate list of your current medications and dietary supplements is also essential. If your complaints are tied to meals, keeping a detailed food and symptom diary for a few days beforehand can greatly assist your doctor in identifying the cause.

Beyond the physical examination, several non-invasive diagnostic and laboratory tools are available to pinpoint the root cause of your symptoms. Our specialist may order:

  • Specialized laboratory panels: complete blood count, liver and pancreatic enzyme panels, celiac disease screening, and food allergy testing.
  • Stool diagnostics: fecal occult blood testing (FOBT), stool cultures, and inflammatory marker quantification (e.g., fecal calprotectin).
  • Breath tests: hydrogen/methane breath tests for lactose or fructose malabsorption, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and Helicobacter pylori infection.
  • Diagnostic imaging: abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI.

Yes. Chronic gastrointestinal complaints are frequently caused by sensitivities to specific dietary components (such as lactose, milk proteins, gluten, or histamine). Based on the nature and timing of your symptoms, the gastroenterologist will order targeted laboratory panels or breath tests, formulate a tailored treatment plan, and often involve our clinical dietitians to ensure balanced nutritional support.
