Headache Clinic

Beyond painkillers: identifying the underlying cause and achieving lasting relief

Recurring headaches are more than just an inconvenience. They can significantly affect your quality of life, ability to work, and personal relationships. Many people rely on over-the-counter painkillers for years to suppress their symptoms, often creating a vicious cycle that can lead to medication-overuse headaches, a secondary headache disorder that may cause even more persistent and debilitating pain.

At our Headache Clinic, we go beyond simply prescribing medication. Our experienced neurologists work to identify the precise type of headache, distinguishing primary headache disorders from headaches caused by underlying medical conditions or spinal problems. Our goal is not only to provide effective relief during acute attacks but also to develop preventive treatment strategies that sustainably reduce the frequency and intensity of future headaches.

What to know before your consultation

An accurate diagnosis requires a thorough understanding of your headache symptoms, patterns, and potential triggers. To help ensure a productive specialist consultation, we recommend the following preparation steps:

What should you know before your appointment?

  • Keep a headache diary: If possible, record your headaches for 2–4 weeks before your appointment. Note when they occur, how long they last, their intensity on a scale of 1–10, any accompanying symptoms, potential triggers (such as stress, sleep patterns, or certain foods), and how well medications relieve the pain.
  • Previous medical reports and imaging results: Please bring any previous neurology reports, cervical spine and brain imaging results (including CT or MRI reports and image CDs), as well as relevant blood test results.
  • List of medications: Prepare a list of all medications you take regularly, including contraceptives and vitamins, as well as any headache medications you have previously tried. Include the names and dosages of each medication.

When should you visit our Headache Clinic?

Headaches can take many forms and arise from a variety of underlying mechanisms. A specialized neurological consultation is recommended if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Migraine symptoms: Throbbing, often one-sided headaches accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. Some attacks may be preceded by an aura involving visual disturbances or flashing lights.
  • Tension-type headaches: A dull, tightening sensation around the forehead or back of the head, often described as a tight band. These headaches may persist for days and can be associated with stress, lack of sleep, or prolonged desk work.
  • Cluster headaches: Episodes of extremely severe, sharp, piercing pain around one eye or the temple, often accompanied by eye redness, tearing, or a runny nose.
  • Increasing frequency or changes in headache patterns: Headaches that were previously occasional become weekly or daily occurrences, or medications that once provided relief are no longer effective.
  • Headaches associated with musculoskeletal or postural problems: Pain radiating from the back of the neck toward the top of the head, accompanied by neck stiffness or shoulder tension (cervicogenic headache).
  • Suspected medication-overuse headache: When you need to take headache medication on more than 10–15 days per month to manage your symptoms.

In addition to comprehensive neurological assessments, our clinic coordinates the necessary diagnostic imaging and supplementary examinations to support accurate diagnosis:

Headache Center

Acute Migraine and Headache Center

The Swiss Medical Services Headache Center is Hungary's first headache center operating in the private healthcare sector, where internationally recognized specialists provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders.

Since April 2021, we have been offering a specialized service for patients suffering from headaches at our Swiss Premium Medical Centers. We opened Budapest's first Acute Migraine and Headache Center, providing targeted treatment for headaches that do not respond to conventional medication.

We primarily recommend this treatment for patients who have experienced migraines or other headaches in the past but are now suffering from more severe attacks that do not respond to their usual medications. Our center may also be able to help if you are experiencing a severe headache and accompanying symptoms, such as nausea, prevent you from taking oral medication.

Living pain-free through preventive neurology

More than 90% of headaches are primary headaches. This means there is no underlying brain injury or tumor—the pain comes from how nerves and blood vessels interact and fire. Modern neurology focuses on moving away from taking high doses of painkillers whenever pain hits, replacing that cycle with targeted, attack-specific relief.

At our Headache Clinic, our neurologists use thorough physical and diagnostic evaluations to rule out serious underlying causes and design a prevention plan tailored to you. By significantly reducing how often your headaches strike, preventive care helps you get back to predictable, worry-free days.

You don't have to settle for persistent pain or rely on handfuls of daily medication. Our experienced neurologists are here to help you uncover what's triggering your headaches and find a treatment plan that actually works.

Key specialties and diagnostic areas:

Primary headache management

  • Distinguishing and treating migraine with or without aura
  • Finding the right prescription relief for active attacks (such as triptans)
  • Managing chronic tension headaches with medication and lifestyle support
  • Care for severe, less common forms like cluster headaches and trigeminal neuralgia

Secondary headache evaluation

  • Ruling out and managing vascular headaches linked to high blood pressure
  • Neurological assessment for cervicogenic headaches originating from the neck
  • Treating and weaning off medication overuse headaches (rebound headaches)
  • Ordering brain imaging (MRI or CT) when needed to rule out structural conditions

Long-term prevention and ongoing care

  • Personalized preventive medication plans to reduce future attacks
  • Doctor reviews of your digital or paper headache diary
  • Identifying personal triggers related to sleep, lifestyle, and stress
  • Regular follow-up visits to fine-tune your treatment and keep it working

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about our Headache Clinic and neurology evaluations.

A migraine usually causes intense, throbbing pain on one side of your head. It often comes with nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, and routine physical activity makes it worse. A tension headache feels more like a dull, tight band squeezing both sides of your head. It doesn't throb, and light everyday movement won't aggravate the pain.

Not necessarily. Most headaches can be accurately diagnosed through a thorough neurological exam and your medical history. Brain imaging (primarily an MRI) is recommended if your headache pattern suddenly shifts, you develop a sudden and unusually severe pain, you experience neurological symptoms like weakness or numbness, or you develop frequent headaches for the first time after age 50.

Avoid taking higher doses on your own, as taking painkillers too frequently can trigger medication overuse headaches. Instead, see a neurologist. We can prescribe targeted migraine treatments (such as triptans) to stop attacks quickly, or start preventive therapies designed to reduce how often they happen in the first place.

A headache diary is one of the most useful diagnostic tools we have. It shows your doctor how often attacks happen, what time of day they strike, whether they connect to your menstrual cycle, and if specific foods or stress trigger them. It also gives us a clear look at how well your current medications are actually working.

Preventive therapies don't stop an active headache in the moment; they work gradually by calming nerve pathways in the brain. It usually takes 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily medication to feel the full benefit, aiming to cut the frequency, length, and intensity of attacks by at least 50%.
